Abstract： This study explored the general characteristics of article usage errors in senior Chinese English major bachelors’dissertations. It innovatively analyzed the causes of the errors from the perspective of discourse information encoding. Based on a self-built corpus，the study employed mixed methods to categorize and quantitatively analyze article usage errors. The findings reveal that article omission is the most frequent error， with the definite article the being most commonly omitted， particularly when referring to inferable information. Less frequent but equally indicative，article redundancy and misuse errors demonstrate a fundamental cognitive difficulty in distinguishing between new， known，and inferable information. It also concludes that the students' article usage errors are not merely simple grammatical errors but a clear manifestation of their underdeveloped discourse information encoding abilities. This study also ofers pedagogical implications for and insights into academic writing instruction in English.
