Abstract:To explore the similarities and differences in illness metaphors in the late novels of Lu Xun and Henry James, this study employs the MIPVU method combined with close reading and AntConc-based corpus statistics to identify illness metaphors in Resurrecting the Dead and The Sense of the Past, The findings reveal that both texts converge on key metaphorical domains- “death,”“life,”“recovery,”and“schizophrenia." While driving the narrative forward through dramatic tension, these metaphors also reflect their respective cultural milieus. The former offers a Confucian strategy of "active engagement with the world",whereas the latter embodies the Christian ethic of "loving others as oneself." Together, they constitute a cross temporal and cultural dialogue, highlighting the intertextuality and interculturality inherent in literary texts from different cultural contexts.
