Determination of Styrene and Ethylbenzene Monomer Residues in Polystyrene Food Containers by GC-MS

Abstract:To establish an eficient,sensitive,and interference-resistant detection method for monitoringthe risk of styrene and ethylbenzene monomer residues in polystyrene (PS) food contact materials and products,this study optimized pretreatment conditions and employed gas chromatography-mas spectrometry (GC-MS) for quantitative analysis.Experiments compared the effects of different extraction solventsand ultrasonication times on extraction efciency.The final pretreatment method involved dissolving samples in dichloromethane and precipitating polymer matrices with methanol,folowed by detection in SIM mode.Styrene and ethylbenzene exhibit good linear relationships within the concentration range of 0.01mg/L to 1.0mg/L , with R2 exceeding 0.999. The method's LOD is 0.05 mg/kg, and the LOQ is 0.15mg/kg . The mean spiked recovery rates at low,medium,and high spiking levels range from 88.2% (204号 to 104.5% , with relative standard deviations ( SRSD )below 4.5% . Application of this method to commercially available polystyrene fod containers demonstrates its ability to overcome complex matrix interferences,yielding accurate and reliable data.This study provides robust technical support forfood safety regulation and product qualitycontrol in relevant industries.
