Effects of Liquid Whey Protein Supplementation Combined with an 8-Week Resistance Training Program on Muscle Hypertrophy and Immune-Related Markers in Young Adults

Abstract:26 untrained colege students were recruited andrandomlydivided into the whey protein group (P group) and the placebo group(C group).Both groupsunderwent 8-week,4-times-per-week,moderate-to-high-intensity resistance training.The subjects ensured consistent diet before and after the intervention.Immediately after training in the P group, 300mL ofPuko Ultra Protein Drink wassupplemented; in the C group,an equal amount of maltodextrin was supplemented.Before andafterthe intervention,tests were conducted:skeletal muscle mass,1RMof squat/lung press,relative peak torqueofflexor/extensor muscles,and fasting blood samples werecollectedbefore,2hoursafter, and 24 hoursaftertheexercise,totestT-AA,IL-6,andIL-1O.Theresultsshowthataftertheintervention,themale participants intheP group have significantly higher skeletal muscle massandrelativepeak torqueofflexor/extensor muscles than those in the C group (P<0.05) ;the1RMof squat/lung press increases significantly( P<0.01 );T-AA increases significantlyat rest,2 hours after exercise,and 24 hours after exercise ( P <0.01); IL-10 increases significantly 24 hours after exercise compared to the resting state ( P <0.05).The female participants in the P group have significantly lowerbody fat percentage than those in the C group ( P <0.05);the 1RMof squat increases significantly ( P <0.01); the relative peak torque of extensor muscles increases significantly( P <0.05).The research conclusion is that during the (20 8- week resistance training period,supplementing with liquid whey proteincan improve protein metabolism toacertain extent,significantly increaseskeletal musclemass and musclestrength,reduce bodyfat percentage,andenhance the body's anti-inflammatory ability and immune function.
