Study on preparation and properties of a new type of modified adhesive for archive binding

Abstract:In order to improve the firmness and durability of archives binding,a new modified adhesive for archives binding was prepared with cassava starch as the main raw material,sodium hypochlorite as the oxidant,sodium hexametaphosphate as the crosslinking agent and sodium hydroxide as the gelatinization agent. The preparation con⁃ ditions were first optimized,and then the basic properties of the modified adhesive were analyzed. The results showed that when the amount of nano-crystalline cellulose was 4% ,the oxidation pH value was 9,the amount of so⁃ dium hypochlorite was 12% ,the amount of sodium hexametaphosphate was 1.2% ,the crosslinking pH value was 10, the crosslinking temperature was 45°C ,the amount of gelatinized sodium hydroxide was 9% ,the viscosity of the modified adhesive was 1544MPa⋅s ,the water absorption was 2.7g/m2 ,the whiteness was 87.3% ,the smoothness was 67.7% ,the gloss was 74.2% ,the air permeability was 21.7μm/Pa⋅s ,the dry pull strength was 2.88m/s ,and the Cobb value was 16.5g/m2 . It shows good basic performance and can play a role in the stability of archives.
