Abstract: Both Khitan and Xianbei originated from the Donghu confederation, nomadic hunting tribes living on the northern grasslands. For thousands of years, they led a nomadic life, taking carts and tents as their homes and migrating with the seasons. Compared to the Han ethnic group in the Central Plains, they were culturally and economically less developed, with social life remaining in the primitive tribal stage. With the wars and conflicts between ethnic groups, interactions between the peoples north and south of the Great Wall have become increasingly frequent. The northern nomadic tribes represented by Xianbei and Khitan have shown a yearning for the culture of the Han ethnic group in the Central Plains. Especially they established regimes such as the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Liao Dynasty, their identification with Han culture became particularly strong. This article aims to examine and analyze the historical changes in the burial customs of Xianbei and Khitan, using the tombs unearthed north and south of the Great Wall over the past century as a starting point, and explore their yearning for and identification with Han culture in terms of burial cultural etiquette.
