Abstract: This study takes George Lakoff and Mark Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory as the core framework, adopts acase study method, and focuses on the high-frequency and constructive spatial orientational words "up/down" in Chinese. By systematically sorting out its mapping rules in the four abstract target domains of "emotion," "social hierarchy," "quantity," and "state," combined with corpus analysis and cultural interpretation, this study reveals the systematic characteristics, cognitive rationale, and deep cultural connotations of the Chinese "up/down" spatial metaphor. Research has found that the spatial metaphor of "up/down" in Chinese forms a logically coherent and hierarchical semantic network, and its mapping relationship is not randomly generated, but rooted in the common bodily experience of humans and shaped by specific cultural models of the Han ethnic group. This study provides a micro perspective for understanding the interactive relationship between Chinese cognitive patterns and cultural thinking, and also provides Chinese language corpus support for cross linguistic verification of cognitive linguistics theories.
