Development of a pen-type magnetic flux leakage flaw detector based on Tunnel Magnetoresistance (TMR) effect

Abstract:Fordetection objects likenarow slitsand slender weldsof largeand medium-sized instrumentsand equipment that are hard to reach closely in non-destructive testing scenarios,a portable,handheld small pen-type magnetic flux leakage flaw detector based on Tunnel Magnetoresistance(TMR)efect has been developed.The dimensions of the device are 150mm×20mm×7 mm,and it can be used for supplementary detection of conventional non-destructive testing equipment.The hardware circuit,firmware program,and upper computer software of the pentype magnetic flux leakage flaw detector were developedand designed.The hardware circuit flteredand noise-reduced theoutput signal from the TMRchipand transmitted ittoa microcontroller after converting ittosingle-ended format.The firmware program sampled the data,applied sliding average filtering,and uploaded it tothe upper computer.The upper computer software displayed the signal waveform.Experimental results showed that the resolution of the pen-type magnetic flux leakage flaw detector was 21.8mGs ( 1Hz )and12.5μGs ( 10Hz ),the maximum lift - off value was 1.6mm ,thestatistical false detection rate was 0.532% ,and the statistical missed detection rate was 0.234% :
