Abstract:The"brush"and"ink"havelongheldacentralroleinthetraditionalChinesepaintingsystem.However,the"waterand-powderimpact"technique,exemplifiedbyJuLian,disruptedthisparadigmtosomeextentbyshifting emphasisto"water" as a dominant medium,thereby expanding theexpressivedimensions of emotional representation in painting.Throughoutthe development and evolutionof the mogu painting style,water transcends its technical function as a mere physical medium, emergingas a key aesthetic element that contributes totheemotional and conceptual depth of the artwork.Focusing on the expressivefunctionof waterin mogu painting,this paper examinesthe"water-and-powder impact" technique practiced by the lateQing painterJuLian,arguingthat waterconstitutesanintegralaestheticelement withinthelyricalandexpresivesystemof this style.
