A Brief Account of the Semantic Evolution of the Tea Utensil Term "Teapot"

Abstract:Chineseteaculture boastsalonghistory,during whichthetypes,functions,forms,andnomenclatureof teautensils haveundergoneaprolongedprocessofevolution.Althoughthepracticeof teadrinkingremainsprevalenttodayresearchershavenot yetdelveddeeplyintothesemanticevolutionoftheseutensils,，nordotheypossessaclearunderstandingof i.Tisstudystartsfrom thecoreteauesilthe"teaot"—and,byconsultingrelevantdfiitionsinineseandforeigndictionaries,lexicons,delated literature,aimstosystematicalltracetheevolutionofthemeaningandterminologyof"teapot"bothwithinChinaandabroad.This analysisconsiders howtheconceptandformoftheteapotvariedacrossdiferenthistoricalperiods inancient China(theTang,Song, Yuan,MingandQingdyasties)duetodieringteadikingcustoms.Tegoalistoariftheistoricalevelomentofitseaning andthedistinctionsinitsfoandfunction.Thisresearchisintendedtocontributetoexpandingthedimensiosofncientteaulture studies and to enhance the international exchange and dissemination of tea culture.
