Abstract：Sinceancient times，China’s educational system included theimperialexaminationasa mechanismforselecting talent， whichbeganintheSuiDynastyandwasabolishedattheendoftheQingDynasty.ItastedformoretanthirtencenturiesinChiese history.Yan Xiuwasasuccesfulfigure withintheimperial examinationsystem.Atthesametime，asthecircumstanceschanged， YanXiugraduallytransformedfromabelieverintheexaminationsystemintoarefomerandeventuallyanabolisher.Hisabilityto adapttothetimesultimatelymadehimawell-knownmoderneducator.Thisarticleanalyzes thereasonsbehindYanXiusrole transformationinthereformofteimperialexaminationsystemandfindsthathisexcelentqualityofkeepingpacewihthetieswas thefundamentalconditionforthetransformationofhisducationalphilosophywhilehispersonalqualitieswerethekeyfactor.The talent-selectionconceptsupheldbyYanXiuandhiseducationalpractices influencedbytheideasofexaminationreformhavehada significant impact on talent selection and cultivation in the new era，as wellas on educational reform.
