A Study on Negative Transfer in the Portuguese Phonological Acquisition of Cantonese Speakers

Abstract：Thevoicingcontrast inPortugueseconsonantsconstitutesoneofthemajorchallenges inL2phonologicalacquisition forChineseleaes.GiventhatCantoneseitselflacksavoicingcontrast，speakersofCantonesedialectsencouterevengreaterdifcultydurngthelearning proces.TosystematicallyexamineCantonesespeakersperceptionandproductionoffivepairsofeasily confusablePortugueseconsonants，thestudyemployedbothaperceptualidentificationexperimentandacousticanalysisofrecoded productinsusingNorthern Mandarinspeakersasacontrolgroup.Theresultsindicatethatbothgroupsshowsignificantdificultyin distinguishingandproducingPortugsevoicdvoicelessconsonantpais，withteostpronoucederorsoccuinginheproessing of "similarphones"，whosephonologicalfeaturespartillyoverlapwiththoseinthelearners'L1.ThefidingsconfihatCantoneseexertsanegative transferefectonthe acquisitionof Portuguese consonants among Cantonese-speaking learners.
