Analysisof the Color Expression PathofCézanne'sLate Portraits / WangWeinan/SchoolofPaintingArt,ChinaAcademyofArt

Abstract:AsakeyfigureofPost-Impressionsm and the "fatherofmodernpainting",Paul Cezanne'slate portraitscreated from1895 to1906 mark thetransformationof Western painting fromtraditionalrepresentational artto modern structural painting.Taking hisportraitsofthisperiodas theresearchobject,thispaper starts withthetransformationofhiscreative contextandcolorcognition.Itinfers howtherelevant worksform fourcorecreativepaths:theconstructionofcolorharmony, the structural expresionofcolor,the emotional projectionofcolorand thecoordination between brushworkandcolor.On this basis,itanalyzes thecolorexpresionformsandvaluesofhispaintinglanguage.Therefore,thecolorexpresionpathsin Cezane's works—including independent form divorced fromfigurative imitation,pictorial structure based on geometricorder, andexpressivefunctioncarryingsubjective emotion—havenotonlypromotedthe development ofcolorlanguage inmoderoil painting,butalsoexertedaprofoundiflueneonlaterartistsinisuderstandingandapplicationofolorexpreioforms.
