Effects of aluminum stress on seed germinationand seedling growth of four Medicago species

Abstract:TocomparethephysiologicalresponsesofdiferentMedicagospeciestoaluminum(Al)stressandidentifygermplasmwith strong Al tolerance,four species M polymorpha,M.lupulina,M.minima,andM.sativa were subjected to Als+ concentrations of 0 50,100,and 150μmol/L .Germination rate,root and shoot dry weights,Al content,and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured.Al stress significantly inhibited seed germinationand seedling growth in all species( P <0.05),with rootbiomass showing the largestreductionindicatingthatotsweretheprmarytargetofltoxicity.M.polymorphehbitedthehghestAltolerance,ai taining highergerminationrate,biomass,andantioxidantenzymeactivitiesandlowerAlaccumulationand malondialdehyde(MDA) content.CorelatinaalysisvealedsigiicantnegativeelationshipsetenAlontentandgrowhprameters,uggestingtate ducedAl accumulationand enhancedantioxidant defense contribute toAl tolerance.These findings highlighted M polymorphaasa promising species forimproving Altolerance in Medicago breeding andforcultivation inacidic soils insouthern China.
