The Practice of Academy Reform During Yan Xiu's Tenure as Education Commissioner of Guizhou

Abstract:During histenureasEducationCommisionerofGuizhou,YanXiuidentified theentrenched issuesinfrontiereducationandinitiatedsystematicreformscenteredontheXuegu Academyin Guiyang.Guided bythe principleof "governing leaming throughpracticalsudies",hetransforedtheacadmyfromanistitutionfocusedonmperialexaminationpreparationintoode schol.Bystablisngialokraovtingteulemeingatitiesessmtsndiingte teachingfaculty,hebrokeawayfromtheconstraintsof traditionalexam-orientededucationandestablishedagoveranceframework integrating"resourceprovision,learningdiscipline,andorganizationalexecution".Withteualemphasison"classicsandmathmatics"andanorietationtowardcontemporaryaisasisoretenets,therefosachievedinsitutioalcontinuityandcosolida tionwhentheXueguAcademywasrenamedthe"Jingshi Academy".YanXiu'sinitiativesnotonlypavedthewayforthemodernizationofeducationinGuizhoubutalsoservedasareplicablemodelforeducatioaltransformationinfrontierprovincesduringthelate Qing Dynasty,ofering a significant case studyfor understanding local practices in modern Chinese educational reform.
