Bronze Connects with Deities： The Symbolic System， Ritual Production， and Cultural Positioning of Sanxingdui Masks

Abstract： Sanxingdui bronze masksarenot staticidols butrathera dynamic formof "divine technology".Theirawe-inspiring powerstemsfromtheoganicintegationofthreeinterelateddimensions：fist，uiquesuprasesoryexageratedsmbolicsystem （protruding eyes，enlargedears，andbroadmouths）designed tomediatebetweenthehumananddivinerealms;second，aritualized productionprocessinwhichtheselectionofbronze materialndtheactofcastingitselfareimbuedwithcosmologicalsignficance， transformingmundanematerialsintosacredetities;andird，itfunctionedasaoreideolgicalapparatusofacomplextoatic state.Ontheoehand，itwasdeeplyootedintelocaltraditiosofcientSu，hileotetherhand，itctivelyagedine sourceexchangeandcultural interaction withotherregions.ThispaperarguesthattheeficacyoftheSanxingduimasks，as instrumentsofsacedouicatidplialutritsldtoughriartietsisoffoalsboatealt ty， and ritualized production.
