Abstract:Tonalacquisitionposes asignificantchalenge inlearning Mandarin Chinese.Thisstudyemploysaperceptualanalysisapproach toinvestigatetheacqusitionoftherisingtoneamongintermediate-levelAmericanlearnersofMandarin.Tefidingsreveal thatthemostcommoncontourrorinvolvesmispronouncingtherisingtoneastefallng-risingtone,hileteostfrequentregister erorisitseazationasalowsingtone.Eorsinproducgthesingtoneoccursignificantlymorftenindlbicndtrisylabic wordsthaninmonosyllbicones,iththemedialposiioninrisyllabicwordseingparticularlyor-prone.Theseinacuraciese largelyatributedtophonologicalinteferencefromEnglish.Pedagogicalimplicationsincludeincorporatingtargetedperceptual training,rhythm exercises ,and context-based tone practice to support more effctive tone acquisition.
