An Analysis of the Stone Hall Architecture of Shijun's Tomb in the Northern Zhou Dynasty

Abstract:ShiJun'sTomboftheNorthern ZhouDynastyexcavatedin2OO3bytheXi'anInstituteofCultural HeritageConservation & Archaeologyat Jingshang Vilage eastofthe Daming Palace sitein Weiyang District,is aSogdian tomb belonging to Shi Jun, whoheldthepositionofLiangzhouSabao(aSogdiancommunityleader)during theNorthern Zhouperiod.ThemostsignificantacademicdiscoveryistheShiJunStoneHallwithintheburialchamber—asingle-eavehip-and-gablerofhallstylestonestructure imitatingwoodenarchitecture.Testonehallfacessouth,measuringfivebayswideandtreebaysdep.Itconsistsofnineteestone slabsdividedintothreesections:thehip-gableroofatthetop,wallpanelsinthemiddle,andabaseatthebottm.Astonedoris locatedontheouhewallprovidingisigtitohonemporarydordsig,chomprsesalinteldoorfrae,tolnd doorleaf,withdoorsudsrngedontdoorleaf.TisstonehallisanuthnticepresetationofortheDyastiesacitectural style.ThroughacomparativeanalysisofthearchitecturalstylesfoundintheNorthernDynasties‘cavetemplesandmuralswiththe physicalbuildingsoftheSuiandTangdynasties,itbecomesevidentthatteNortheZhouStoneHallemergedduringatrasitional period that bridged the preceding and succeeding eras.
