A Study on the Chinese Translation of Miao Place Names in Xiangxi

Abstract:ThisstudyexaminestheChinesetranslationofMiaoplacenames,focusingonvilagenamesintheXiangxiTujiaand MiaoAutonomousPrefecture.Employingamixed-methodsapproachthatcombinesqualitativeandquantitativeanalysis,theresearch revealsthattepredomantraslatiosategreignation.Underthisstatgytrasiterationandliteraltraslationaetprimarymethodsused.Transierationiscommonlyappliedtohigh-frequencytermssuchaspaiandhang,aswellasplacenamsasso ciatedwithtopographicalfeaturesandspatialorientation,whileliteraltranslationismorefrequentlyemployedfornamesrelatedto flora.Threemaintranlationtehnqusareientified:amplifationomision,andiahneseridtranslationAmpliicatioteninvolvesthditioofpaiclsorprefessuchs"da"(big)"shang"(upper),nd"xia"(owertoistingshdminstati gionsorclarifydirectionalityOmisiontypicallyinvolvestereductionofprefixesorkeyinfomationalelementsMiaoCinsehy bridtranslations generallyconsistofa Miaonouncombined withaChinese noun.TheChinesetranslationofMiaoplacenames displaysseveralnotablefeaures:adominantuseofforeigzationstrategies;thetentioofposmodifngarbuts typicaloftesouce language; multiple Chinesequivalentsforasingle Miaoterm;andfrequentlossinthetransmisionofsource-culturalcootations.
