Research on the Posthumous Edicts of the Empresses Dowager in the Qing Dynasty

Abstract: There wereeleven Empreses Dowagerinthe Qing Dynasty,among whicheight,namelythe Empress Xiaozhuang Wen,theEmpressXiaohuiZhang,theEmpress XiaogongRentheEmpressXiaoshengXian,theEmpress XiaoheRui,theEmpre XiaojingCheng,theEmpress Xiaozen Xian,andtheEmpressXiaoqinXian,leftposthumousedictswhentheypasedaway.Inthe past,scholarsseldompaidatentiontothisissue.TheyonlyconductedindividualstudiesoneachEmpressDowagerormerelymade comparative poiticalsudiesbetweentheEmpress Xiaozhuang WenandtheEmpressXiaoqin Xian.Through VeritableRecordsofthe QingDynastyandtheexistingrelevantarcives,thisarticleconductsadetailedanalysisof theseeightposthumous edicts oftheEmpresesDowagerintheQing Dynasty.Itsummarizesandconcludesthecommonalitiesoftheseposthumous edictsasawhole,suchas theirformsandcontents,promulgationanddisemination.TheposthumousedictsoftheEmpresesDowagerintheQingDyastyreflectthepoliticalwisdomandimperialcourtauthorityofteEmpressesowager.Attesametime,asedonthediferencsnthe individualcontentsofeach posthumous edictoftheEmpressDowager,andbycombiningandcomparing withtherelevantactionsof theemperorsbeforeandafterthepromulgationoftheposthumousedicts,thisarticlerevealstoacertainextentthetruerelatioship between the emperors and their mothers as reflected in the posthumous edicts.
