ThePath ofDialectical Cultivation： An Exploration into Confucius’ s Theory of “Zhi"

Abstract：Thetheoryof“zhi”ocupiesanimportantpositioninConfucianthought.“Zhirepresentsthepurityofheartandactions， free from selfishness and “ qu ".However，not all straightforward actions and emotions reflects the nature of “ zhi ”，which is not aperfect existence and whose refinement calls for the guidance of “ ii ”（ritual） and the cultivation through“xue”（learning），moving toward the ideal of“ren”（benevolence）. In this process，“ zhi ”transcends itself through self-negation，achieving“ren”in a seemingly“ qu ”manner.Thus， true“ zhi ”is esentially“ren”，going beyond the empirical oposition of straightnessand crookedness，and leveraging the powerof“ qu ”to achieve itself.
