Evaluation on eco-adptability of two chayote cultivars in south-subtropical area

Abstract:Toprovideatheoreticalbasisforhigh-yieldandhigh-qualitycultivationofchayote,themaincultivarsof green chayote and white chayote in western Yunnan were planted with equal row spacing under two different cultivation methods:Facilitycultivationandfieldcultivation.Theagronomictraitsandyieldcharacteristicsofchayotewereinvestigated, andthemainfunctionalnutrientsofchayote vinewereanalyzed.Theresults showedthatthecomprehensiveeffects ofcultivars,cultivation methods andseasons had extremely significant effcts onthegrowthand yieldofchayote.Insummer and autumn,chayote plants exhibitedvigorous growth,increased branching,andashorter harvesting period,with the yieldofchayotevine frombothcultivarsbeingsignificantlyhigherthaninspringand winter.Underfacilitycultivation, theyieldofchayote vineforbothcultivarsacrossdifferentseasons wassignificantlyhigher than fieldcultivation,withannual total yields increasing by 34.61% and 22.33% ,respectively.Amongthe two cultivars,greenchayote demonstrated superior plant growth and yield potential compared to whitechayote.No significant diference was observed inthecontent of polysaccharides,totalphenols,andtotalflavonoidsinchayotevineamongdiferentcultivars,cultivationmethods,or seasons.However,the watercontentofchayote vine was significantly influenced byseasonalchanges,with bothcultivars showingthe highest watercontentinsummer,indicating similar eatingquality.Therefore,cultivating these two chayote cultivars inthe south subtropicalregion can enableyear-round productionand staggered market supplyofchayote vine.
