Causes and regulation of low strength influent in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in a TownofMa'anshan City from theperspective of landscape irrigation

AbstractTreated municipal wastewater that meets relevant standards can be reused for landscape irrigation. However,lowstrength influentresultsininsuficientnitrogenandphosphorus nutrientsintheeffluentand waterquality fluctuations,thereby affecting landscape irrigation effciency.Accordingly,a wastewater treatmentplantinMa’anshan City was takenas theresearch object.Basedonthestatistical analysis of its waterqualityandquantitymonitoring data from 201 to 2O23,combined with the general surveyof drainage units and investigation of pipe network structure,the keyfactors leading tothelow strength influent were identified,and targetedregulation countermeasures were proposed. Theanalysis showed that the influent chemical oxygen demand(COD) concentration had a significant negative correlation with monthly precipitation ( r=-0.91 , P3/d on sunny days and increasing to 7200m3/d onrainy days;5interceptingwellshad riverwaterbackflow,which further diluted the influent strength.Themixed connection of rainwater and sewage pipe networks was the dominant factor leading to low influent strength during rainydays,and162 mixed connection points causeda large amount ofrainwater to invade the sewage system. In addition,the investigation of 96 residential communities showed that about 47% of the drainageunits had severe internal sewage-stormwater mixedconnection (the ammonianitrogen strength in the stormwater pipes of 39 communities was > 10mg/L ).Therefore, the main causes of low influent strength in the wastewatertreatment plant in the studyarea were the functionaland structural deficienciesoffacilities such as the sewage and stormwater pipe network,theneed forimprovementinthe source sewage-stormwater mixed connection and supervisionofdrainageunits,thefunctionaldefectsofinterceptionfacilities,ndthelowlevelofsysteminteligence.In response tothis,targeted regulation strategies are proposed to ensure nutrient stabilityand waterqualityreliabilitywhen effuent is usedforlandscape irigation,which including comprehensivelycarrying outdrainagepipe networkdetection and non-excavation repair,promoting the sourcerectificationof drainage unitsandthe supervisionof drainage permits, and implementing theintelligent transformationof interception facilitiesand pumpingstations,soas tosystematically improve the sewage collection efficiency and influent strength.
