Effects of biochar on soil enzyme activity and fruit quality of facility-grown strawberries

AbstractThis paper summarized the regulatory mechanisms by which biochar improves strawbery fruit quality, focusingonsoil enzymeactivitysoil microbialcommunitystructure,and fruitqualityaspects.Interms ofsoil enzyme activity,biochar enhances nitrogen transformationbyincreasing soil ureaseactivity;boostsphosphataseactivity to effctively improve the conversion of soil organic phosphorus;increases catalase activity,thereby reducing the accumulationof reactiveoxygen species (ROS)in strawberryroots,protectingcell membranesand functional proteins fromoxidative damage,and efectively alleviating oxidative stress;and raises invertaseactivityaccelerating carbon metabolism and promoting the turnoverof the soil organiccarbonpool,providinga stable carbon source for strawberry roots.Regarding soil microbial community structure,biochar optimizes soil pore structure,improves soil water and nutrientretention capacity,regulates thesoil microbial communitystructure,enriches beneficialmicrobial groups such asProteobacteriaandActinobacteria,andenhancestheecolgicalfunctionsofthesoil.Concerningfruitqualitybiochar improves soil physicochemical properties and photosynthetic eficiency,promoting thesynthesis of photosynthetic products inleavesandthe transportandaccumulationofsugarstothefruits.Simultaneously,itregulatestheactivityof keyenzymes involved inorganicacid metabolism,reducing thecontentofcitric acidandmalicacid inthefruit,thereby increasig thesoluble sugar contentand sugar-acidratioof strawberies.Italsopromotes the proliferationof beneficial soil microrganisms,enhances plant secondary metabolism,facilitates the accumulation of flavor compounds,and ultimatelyachieves the improvementoffruit quality.This paper elucidates theroleof biochar in improving strawberry qualitythrough a multi-level linkage efect involving“soil enzyme activity-microbial community-nutrientcycling - lantmetabolism”,providingabasis forsoilimprovementandfruitqualityregulationinfacilitystrawberrycultivation.
