Abstract: [Purposes] Against the backdrop of the "dual carbon" goals and the rapid growth of new energyinstalltions,enhancing the operational flexibility of coal-fired power units to facilitate new energy accommodation has become an urgent necesity. Therefore,it is imperative to conduct research and analysis on technical pathways for retrofiting coal-fired power units.[Methods]Focusing on an earlycommissioned 3OO MW subcritical unit in China,this paper analyzes the key factors constraining the deeppeak shaving flexibility ofcoal-fired power units.Based on this analysis,existing technical routes were comparatively evaluated.The selected route was then practically implemented.Furthermore,an economic benefit evaluation model was constructed incorporating the operational dynamics of the electricity spot market.[Findings] Following the flexibility retrofit,the unit demonstrated safe and stable operation at 30% of its rated load, with emissions meeting environmental standards. Concurrently,the retrofit yielded positive economic benefits.[Conclusions] The technical pathway enabling stable operation at 30% rated load is proven mature and feasible.In the current context of accelerating electricity spot market deployment and the frequent occurrence of negative electricity prices,implementing flexibility retrofits is deemed highly necessary both from the perspective of policy compliance and economic viability. The findings provide valuable reference and guidance for retrofiting existing coal-fired power units.
