Screening of salt-tolerant watermelon germplasm at germination stage

Abstract:Thescarcityofsalt-tolerant watermelon germplasmresources limitsits large-scale production insaline soils. Using12 watermelon germplasm as test materials,theeffctsof different concentrations ofsalt treatments(0,100, 150 and 200mmol⋅L-1 NaCl)on their germination were studied.The germination rate,germination index,and germination potential were measured,and thesalt tolerance of the12 watermelon germplasm were comprehensivelyevaluated usingmethods such as subordinate functionanalysisandclusteranalysis.Theresults showed thatcompared withCK ( 0mmol⋅L-1 NaCl),salt treatments at diferent concentrations reduced the germination potential,germination index, shootlength,andvigorindex inmost watermelongermplasm,whilethesaltinjuryindexwastheopposite.Thesalt tolerance of the 12 watermelon germplasms showed significant diferenceduring the germination stage.Byusing the subordinatefunctionand clusteranalysis,thegermplasmresources wereclassified as follows:W62,E125,E62andB24as salt-tolerant,B12,C84,C21,A79andD12asmoderatelysalt-tolerant,C5,D47andB56assalt-sensitive.Therearch resultsprovide materialsfortheexplorationofsalt-tolerantgenesandthebreedingofsalt-tolerantvarietiesinwatermelon.
