Abstract: The American short story writer O.Henry is widely recognizedfor his focus on human destinyandthe themeof human nature.Theemotionalbondsbetweencharactersinhisworksserveaskeynarativetreads,andthechoicestheymakeintimesof adversityoftenreflecttheirunderlying motivations.ThisstudyexaminesfourselectedshortstoriesbyO.Henrythroughthelensof Maslowshierarchofneeds，analyzingthecharactersbehavioralmotivationsacross fivelevels—physiologicalneeds，safetyneds, loveandbelonging,esteem,andselfactualizationaswellasthetradeoffsmadebetweentesediferentneeds.TheanalysissuggeststhattheeedforloveandblongingoupiesadominantpositioniOHnysworks.Inordertofulfillthislevelofedotr nedsareoftenwilinglysubordinatedThisonclusionnotonlyrevealsthepsychologicalfoundationofhischaracterconstructionut also reflects the deep humanistic concerns embedded in his narratives.
