Abstract:Toinvestigate thecorelationofsalt tolerancebetweenseedgerminationstageandseedlingstage,andtodetermine whether salt tolerance during germination can serve as an indicator forsalt tolerance in theseedling stage,16 watermelon cultivars wereused as experimental materials.Salt stress-related physiologicaland growth parameters—including germinationpotential,gerinationate,salt injuryindex,totalfreshmasd,shootfreshass,lorophyllontent,alodialdehyde(MDA)content,and proline content—were measured at the germination and seedling stages.Principal componentanalysis,membershipfunctionanalysis,andcorrelationanalysis wereemployedtocomprehensivelyevaluatesaltolerance traitsatbothdevelopmentalstages.Theresults indicated thatNaCltreatmentsignificantlyreducedtotalfreshmass and shoot fresh mass of seedlings,while increasing MDA and proline content.Thecomprehensive membership function value at the seedling stage ranged from O.16Oto O.789.Based on key indicators such assalt injury index,fresh mass, shootfreshmasschlorophyllcontent,MDAcontent,andprolieontent,the16cultivarswereclassfiedintofvealttolerancegrades using cluster analysis.Similarly,at the germinationstage,thecomprehensive membership functionvalues rangedfromO.O043 to0.830,andthecultivars were grouped intofivesalt tolerance classes.Correlation analysis between theaverageandcomprehensivemembershipfunctionvaluesatthetwostages—according tothefive-gradeclassification systemestablishedatthegerminationstage—revealedPearsoncoelationcoeficientsofO.727andO.826,respetively,indicating astrong positivecorrelationbetween salt tolerance atthe germinationand seedling stages.Thesefindings suggest that salt toleranceatthegermination stagemaybeareliable predictorofsalt tolerance performance atthe seedling stage inwatermelon.Theresearchresultsprovideatheoreticalbasisfortheearlyscreeningofwatermelonsalt-tolerantresource.
