Molecular marker identification of rind hardness and flesh color in watermelon

Abstract:Rind hardnessand fleshcolorare importanttarget traits in watermelon breeding.Previous studies have mainly focusedonthegeneticmechanismof thesetraits,buttherearefewresearchinmolecularbreeding.Inorder toverifythe applicability of relevant molecular markers and scren for excelent germplasm resources,genotypic analysis was performedon38 watermelon germplasm resources using publicly reported molecular markers closely linked to watermelon rindhardnessandfleshcolor.Bycombining textureanalyzer-basedrind hardnessandfleshcolorphenotypic identification,17crack-tolerantbreding materials,27bright-red-fleshbreedingmaterials,nd16breding materialscombining both crack tolerance and bright red flesh were selected,including 7smallfruit and2 middle fruit types.The genotype matches the phenotype(except K2O),indicating that the tested molecular markers are suitable in watermelonbreeding materials screning.This study provides basis for molecular marker asisted selection to promote watermelon rind hardness and flesh color in the next step.
