Private Salt and Japanese Pirates: A Study of the Defence System and Social Change in Miaowan Town in the Middle and Late Ming Dynasty

Abstract:Asthetwomajorsocialproblems oftheMingDynasty,theinteractionsbetweentheproliferationof privatesatandthe invasionofJapaneseinvaders hadafar-reachingimpactonthedefencesystemandsocialgovernanceofthecoastalareas.Thepaper takes MiaowanTown,thekeytownofHuaihai,astheresearchobject,focusingonthedualatributesofthetownasbothasaltfrm andamajortownofcoastaldefene.Troughtemethodofliteratureresearchitsystematicallsortsouthistoricaldocumentssuchas oficialdoumentsloalcronclesandprivateoltios,andfussonteintealrelatioshipndocialimpactbetente problemof privatesaltandtheJapaneseinvasion.Thestudyfidsthat,againstthebackdropoflaxcoastaldefenceduringtheJiajing Dynasty,theweakeningoftheregulationofsaltfarsldtoterapidexpansionoftepowerofsaltsmuglersandteirousion withJapaneseinvadersforedaviciouscicle,hichotolyxacerbatedcialuestatthgrassrotsvel,utalsoledina systematiccrisisinthecoastal defencesystem.Tedynamicgamebetweenthesaltadministrationandcoastal defenseconstruction notnlyreshapedthemliarygeographyofaoanTowutalsoprofoundlyaffctedtheprocesoflocalpowerstrucureado cialorderrecostructionerefore,toudestandefenesteandsoialngsinowanTowitisessytoosider therelationshipbetweenprivatesalt and theJapaneseinvasionasa whole.
