A Study on the Seismic Performance of Rocking Self-Centering Central Columns in Underground Stations

Abstract: [Purposes] The central column is the weakest component in underground stations under seismic action, and its insufficient seismic capacity is a primary cause of structural damage or even collapse. To mitigate seismic hazards,this study proposes implementing a rocking self-centering structural form for the central columns.[Methods] Numerical analysis was performed using an established soil-structure interaction model.Sensitivity analyses were first conducted on influencing factors such as the axial compression ratio of the central column and the configuration of unbonded prestressed tendons.Subsequently,the seismic performance of the rocking self-centering central column within the underground station was investigated.[Findings] The results show that,compared to the conventional fixed-base form,the shear forces and bending moments at both ends of the rocking self-centering central column decreased by 30% to 40% under seismic action. However, due to the presence of unbonded prestressed tendons,the axial force sustained by the segmented central column increased by 5% to 10% . Afterimplementing the rocking self-centering central column,the increases in shear force and bending moment in the sidewalls were limited to less than 10% .Moreover, different configurations of energy dissipation components in the central column had a negligible influence on the internal forces of the sidewalls.[Conclusions]The rocking self-centering central column can effectively enhance the seismic resistance of station center columns and demonstrates good applicability in underground station structures.
