New Testing Method and Equipment Development for Soil Tensile Strength

Abstract: [Purposes] The tensile strength parameters of soil are important for engineering design. Due to the lack of consistent and mature testing standards,current methods face challenges such as limited applicability,operational dificulties,and unreliable results.This study based on the mechanical properties of soil and geotechnical testing methods,through indirect and direct tensile strength tests,aims to solve the problem of inaccurate determination of soil tensile strength.[Methods]A direct tensile method was adopted.A horizontal soil sample tensile device and a corresponding molding mold were developed. The integrated molding mold alows for sample preparation and clamping in one step,enabling plugand-play sample installation.A computer-controlled program was designed to automate the push-pull testing process.[Findings] Through multiple simulation tests,statistical results of the soil tensile tests were automatically generated.Finally,a standard for the tensile strength test of soil was established and issued by the National Water Conservancy Project Quality Supervision and Inspection Center.[Conclusions] The complete setof equipment for soil tensile strength testing developed in this study is based on an easily understandable principle,features simple operation,relatively small errors,and automatically generated test results.The testing method is practical and feasible.
