Application of Contour Smoothing Method to the Estimation of Ephemeral Gully Erosion on Landfill Slopes

Abstract:[Purposes] Soil erosion on the slopes of spoil disposal/landfill sites from production and construction projects often manifests as rill erosion and ephemeral gully erosion.However,the steepness of these slopes makes manual measurement difficult.To address this problem,this study integrated unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) low-altitude remote sensing technology with geographic information system (GIS) technology.It innovatively applied the contour smoothing method to establish an eficient and accurate method for measuring soil erosion on slopes,thereby providing a new solution for soil and water conservation monitoring. [Methods] Taking an eroded slope in Hongshan District,Wuhan City,Hubei Province as the research object, contour lines were extracted from a 2 cm resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM)obtained by UAVand then smoothed.The soil lossin the study area was calculated using the ArcMap 10.6 platform and compared with the loss calculated from field measurements.[Findings] Compared with the field measurement results,the soil loss calculated from the DEM showed a closeness of approximately 96.36% ,indicating that the estimation of ephemeral gully erosion on slopes based on the DEM contour generalization method is highly reliable.After smoothing,the DEM surface area, volume, and contour length showed significant changes,with reductions of 1.36% , 1.46% ,and 21.64% ,respectively.The smoothing processcan effctively restore the pre-erosion surface morphology of the ephemeral gully on the slope.However,due to limitations in image resolution,the smoothing process also simplified the surface morphology.[Conclusions] The contour smoothing method demonstrates high reliability in calculating ephemeral gully erosion and provides significant reference value for estimating ephemeral gully erosion in production and construction projects.
