Analysis of a Heavy Pollution Process in Zongyang County During the Spring Festival in 2025

Abstract: [Purposes] To explore the causes of severe PM2.5 pollution in Zongyang County from January 28th to January 29th,2O25.[Methods] Based on aerosol Lidar data,air station data,meteorological data, and backward trajectorymodel,theeffectsoflocal emissions,polltion transport,and meteorological conditions on polltion were analyzed.[Findings] The results showed that during this pollution event,the impact of fireworks was prominent. During the concentrated fireworks discharge period (2O:OO on January 28th to 11:O0 on January 29th), the contribution values of PM2.5 to the Environmental Protection Bureau and the County Government monitoring stations were 229μg/m3 and 242μg/m3 ,respectively. The near-surface wind speed was generally lower than 1m/s ,with increased relative humidity (up to 96 % ) indicating unfavorable meteorological conditions.The aerosol lidar results revealed a superposition effect of high-altitude pollution setlement in the morning of January 29. The backward trajectory results showed that the air flow at 0.5km height originated from Yingshan County to the west of Zongyang County and then entered Zongyang County from the southwest direction.[Conclusions] Fireworks discharge,pollution transport,and static,high-humidity meteorological conditions collectively led to the increase in PM2.5 concentration, resulting in severe air pollution.
