Occurrence characteristics and pollution assessment of nutrients and heavy metals in the surface sediments of a shallow lake in Southern Jiangsu Province

AbstractTorevealtheoccurrence characteristicsof nutrients and heavymetals inthe surface sediments of shallow lakes,a typical shalow lake in Southern Jiangsu Province was takenas the studyobject.Surface sedimentsamples were collected,andtheconensoftotalphosphorus(T),totalitrogen,lead(Pb),romium(Cr),dmium(Cd),i (As),nickel(Ni),andcopper(Cu)weredetermined.Theiroccurrencecharacteristicsandpollutionstatus wereanalyzed. The results showed that the average content of rp and TN in the surface sediment of the lake was 511.O4 and 1932.93 mg/kg,espectively,indicating moderate polution overall.There were differences in the spatial distributionof TP and TN, with TP exhibiting spatial heterogeneityand TN having a more uniform spatial distribution. 45.74% of the sampling pointshadlowpotential ecological risksfor heavymetals insurfacesediments; there were enrichment phenomena of Pb , Cd,As,Ni,and Cu in the surface sediments of sampling points,among which Cd enrichment factor and potential ecological risk contribution rate( 78% )were the highest,which was the main factor of concern. Spatially, the heavymetal contents generallshowedadistribution trendof higher values inthenorthwest andlower values in the southeast.The assessment using the potential ecological risk index indicated that the lakearea was at a moderate ecological risklevel,withtheriskdistributionconsistentwiththespatial characteristicsofCdcontent.Thisstudy provides a reference for the eutrophication control and water quality improvement of shallow lakes.
