AbstractTheresearch on the efectsof salt stress on the growth, physiology, and secondary metabolism of medicinal plantswasreviewed. In terms of growth, medicinal plantsexhibit varying responses to salt stress during germinationand growth stages.Low-concentration salt stressmay promote seed germination in Salvia miltiorrhiza (if thesalt concentration is 2O mmol/L)or enhance seedling growth in Periploca sepium (if thesalt concentration is (204 0.2% -0.5%),while high-concentration stress often inhibits biomass accumulation and inducesmorphological changessuch as alterations inroot-to-shootratio.Atthe physiological level, salt stress induces membrane lipid peroxidation in medicinal plants, leading to increased malondialdehyde content and relative electrical conductivity, resulting in celular membrane damage. To scavenge reactive oxygen species, the activities of antioxidant enzymes suchassuperoxide dismutase and peroxidase initially increase but subsequently decline.Regarding secondary metabolism, moderate salt stresscan enhance theaccumulation of pharmacologically active compounds, such as flavonoids, alkaloids, andcardiacglycosides,in various medicinal plants (e.g.,Pogostemon cablin,Rumexjaponicus, and Taraxacum mongolicum),thereby improving the qualityof medicinal materials. In summary, lowsalt stress may promote the growth of some salt-tolerant medicinal plants, but stressbeyond their tolerance range causes cellular damage.Appropriately appliedsalt stress can stimulate the production of higher levelsof active compounds in certain medicinal plants.Thisreview provides insightsforselecting suitable soil conditionsfor medicinal plant cultivation.
