The Co-construction of Form and Sound: The Visual Symbols and Aesthetic Evolution of Wind-Bells from a Sinicized Perspective

Abstract:Wind-belloriginatedintheNeolithicAgeandweretheitualimplementsfordivinationanddailyutensilsoftheancient people.Later，theywereusedaseaveoramentsandarchitecturalritualbjectsWiththeintroductionofBuddhismintoChinawindbellstransforedfromthecustomof“hangingBaoduo(preciousbels)）”inIdianstupasintoarcitecturaldecorations.Indierenteras, theformsandfunctionsofwid-bellsvarid:intheTangDynastytheywerejde-platewind-belsusedforcourtentertainent；inthe SongDynasty，theywereironwind-bellintemplesforalertingpractitionersduringtheircultivation；inteYuanDynastytheywere WhitePagodawind-belsintegratingEsotericBuddistimpliedmeanings；andintheMingandQingDnastis，teywerewindbelsvaluedforbothaestheticandpracticalityAsBudistitualiplements，ind-belssmbolizetefunctioalmeanngsof“alertess”“joy” and“teachingtheDharma”.TheclearsoundofthebellsymbolizestheBuddha’svoice，aimedatarousingpractioners’reverncefor Buddhismandsuddenelightenment toBuddism.Thispaperexplorestheaestheticsignificanceofwind-belsonavecornerstodemonstrate their role and artistic value as components of ancient architecture.
