A Study on the Five-Stringed Pipa in the Murals of Kizil Grottoes

Abstract：Thfive-stringedpipadepictedinthemuralsofKizilGrotoesservesasacrucialpiceofevidenceofthemusicalndultur alexchangesbetweeChinaandtheWestalongtheSilRoadFromtheperspectivesoficonogaphyandpilologytispaperexamite originistocalotdicalactestofrdiinilosachealsa sringedipaorigiatedfroteAmaravatiartofIdiaasroducdtoeCentralPsviateKucharegiondebitsighlyal isticrepresentationinKizilmurals—particularlyinitspear-shapedresonanceboxandcurvedneck designThesefeatures，whichpredate thosefoundinDunuangmuralsanddsplaydiversefors，coroborateKucha’spivotalroleasaubfortheeastwardspreadofBuddism. Crossefereingstaltetsdotoageemotatesattiringdievolditoasgoalistt graltothe“TenMusicalDivisions”（ShiBuYue）oftheTangDynastyThe morphologicalevolutionofthepipainKizilGrotosevealsits trajectoryofrefemntutreitsstructuraoespndcewithteTangrapipapresedinJpan’sosinepositopro vides additional evidence for the diachronic dissemination of musical instruments along the Silk Road.
