A Study on the Five-Stringed Pipa in the Murals of Kizil Grottoes

Abstract:Thfive-stringedpipadepictedinthemuralsofKizilGrotoesservesasacrucialpiceofevidenceofthemusicalndultur alexchangesbetweeChinaandtheWestalongtheSilRoadFromtheperspectivesoficonogaphyandpilologytispaperexamite originistocalotdicalactestofrdiinilosachealsa sringedipaorigiatedfroteAmaravatiartofIdiaasroducdtoeCentralPsviateKucharegiondebitsighlyal isticrepresentationinKizilmurals—particularlyinitspear-shapedresonanceboxandcurvedneck designThesefeatures,whichpredate thosefoundinDunuangmuralsanddsplaydiversefors,coroborateKucha’spivotalroleasaubfortheeastwardspreadofBuddism. Crossefereingstaltetsdotoageemotatesattiringdievolditoasgoalistt graltothe“TenMusicalDivisions”(ShiBuYue)oftheTangDynastyThe morphologicalevolutionofthepipainKizilGrotosevealsits trajectoryofrefemntutreitsstructuraoespndcewithteTangrapipapresedinJpan’sosinepositopro vides additional evidence for the diachronic dissemination of musical instruments along the Silk Road.
