The Spanish-American War: The Search for New Frontiers and the Formation of an Empire

Abstract:In1898,awarbrokeoutbetweentheemerging UnitedStatesofAmericaandtheoldcolonialempireSpain,laterknownas the“Spanish-AmericanWar”AftertheCivilWarthefurtherintegrationandexpansionofthedomesticmarketinteUnitedStates,cou pledwiththerapiddevelopmentofnewbusinessmodels，rodethewaveoftheSecondIndustrialRevoution.ThecombinationofthesefactorsquicklyenabledtheUnited Statestosurpass theeconomicpowerofestablishedEuropeanpowerssuchasBritainandFranceIncontrast，Spain，soeoftefist“piors”iopeingnewsaroutes,indedrapedeoousprofitsinearlysages.Howeveruet royalcouptioexposddawbacksofteedalstandpoorcoloalmanageent，itsevetualleplcedbyriaindtin uedtodecline.TheSpanish-American WarwastrigeredbytheCubanisue.CubawasaSpanishcolonyandalsothelocationofAmerican commercialinterests.WentenationalinterestsoftetwocountriesclashdontissallCaribbeanisland，aninevitablewarsued. ThesignificanceofthisarfortheUnitedStatesasfarbeyondseizingafewcolonies；itchangedhedomesticpoliticalecologdemon stratedMahan’s“SeaPowerTheory”throughpractice，andpromotedtheUnitedStates’searchfornewfrontiersandtheestablishentfa Pacific Empire.
