Three-Level Learning Goal System in The Analects of Confucius·Xue Er and Interpretation of Its Philosophical Thoughts Embedded

Abstract:Theterm "learning"intheChinesecontext first appeared intheopening pasage ofThe AnalectsofConfucius·Xue Er.Whileseminglyunstructuredatfistglance,acoserexaminationofhistoricaltextsrevealsthatitnotolyestablished"eaing" asafundamentalcategoryinConfucianeducationalphilosophybutalso,throughthesemanticinterplaybetween "study"and"practice",outlinedaleangojectivsstemcenteredo"jy"is"oisotmerelyanmotioalesponsebutepresentsr gressiverealmsoflearning:thejyofself-cultivationthroughtimelypractice,whichhighlightsthepracticalwisdomoftheunityof knowledgeandaction;thejoyofenlighteningothersbyextendingfromoneself,whichdemonstratestheethicalpracticeofempathy; andthe joyofself-trascendencethroughsupremegoodesswhichachievesthemoralsubject'sself-surpaingThesetheralms constiuteacompletecultivationsystem:aknowledge-acquisitionmethodgroundedintheunityofkowinganddoing;apathtoealizinglife's valuethrough extending fromself toothers;andaself-cultivationorientationaimed atataining supreme goodness.
