Abstract:This paper examines Shakespeare's The Merchantof Venice,exploringtheethical identitiesandchoices of its charactersfromtheperspectivesofgenderethicsandcontractethics,asedonethicaliterarycriticism.Italsorevealstebehaviorotiationsandvalueetatiosoftaactersinicaloflicts.Furthere,searhindsatinteprahalityale characters,uchasortiaandsicaevitablyosessapassieandompromisednaure,ileattesetie,aelsor belious totetditioalgedeosesids,eontrcticsisxplod,cnteringonrousotractualonfictsieplay suchasthewell-known"apoundofflesh"contract.Byanalyzingthesocietyof Veniceattheendof16thcentury,thispaperis aimedtoprovideanewperspectiveforthefieldofeticalliteraryciticismandofervauableinsights tocontemporaryssuesof gender equality and contract spirits.
