Qualitative study of COPD patients' illness experience based on Schmitt strategic experiential modules

Abstract  Objective：To clarify the illness experience of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease（COPD），and to provide reference for clinical nursing decision making.Methods：Objective sampling method was used to select 14 COPD patients from the department of respiratory and critical care medicine of a tertiary grade A hospital in Luoyang city for face⁃to⁃face semi⁃structured interviews.The data were analyzed by Calaizzi 7⁃step analysis method.Results：According to Schmitt strategic experiential modules theory，four themes and 14 sub⁃themes were summarized.These were sensory experiences（endless coughing and panting，the feeling of being suffocated，significantly limited physical activity，exacerbated by cold），emotional experiences（difficulty sleeping，sensitivity to fear of being rejected，guilt dragging down the family，fear of death），thinking experiences（vague knowledge about the disease，confusion about the lack of access to continuous treatment），and action experiences（wish Means to share，accept and actively deal with the disease，negative treatment of rehabilitation treatment）.Conclusions：Patients with COPD had complicated and varied illness experience.It was necessary for medical staff to take effective measures to improve the physical and mental health of patients according to the patients' illness experience，so as to provide reference for further improving the level of medical care service.
