AbstractThe myostatin gene MSTN,a crucial regulator of muscle development,holds significant research value andapplication potentialin livestock production.Thisarticlereviewed theresearch progress onthe mechanismof action of the MSTNgene,itsrolein livestockand poultry growth,and itsapplication in livestock and poultry breeding improvement.MSTN inhibits the proliferationand differentiationof myoblasts,therebyreducing muscle growth rateand meat yield.Its regulatory processinvolves multiplecoordinated signaling pathways,such as modulating the expressionof factors like Myf5,MyoD,andCDK2,and interacting with molecules including insulin-like growth factor-1(IGF-1). Duringanimal growth,MSTN regulates skeletal muscle developmentbysuppressing both the hyperplasia and hypertrophyof muscle fibers,and itcan alsoinfluence fatyacid metabolism byaltering mitochondrial function in skeletalmuscle.Regarding breeding applications,keySNPshavebeen identified within the MSTNgene incatlegoats, pigs,and other livestock.These SNPs can serveas molecular markers for meat traits,facilitating eficient breeding programs. Utilizing individuals with MSTN mutations through crossbreeding strategies (e.g. two-way or three-way crosses)alongside precise feeding management enablesthe development of superior breeds with excellent characteristics.Furthermore,modern gene-editing technologies likeCRISPR/Cas9can be applied to the MSTN gene to promote muscle growth,improve meat quality,and create new livestock lines.This review provides areference for the application of the MSTN gene in livestock and poultry genetic breeding.
