Cellulose Nanocrystal Photonic Films: Fabrication and Stimuli-responsive Properties

Abstract:Inthisstudy,aphotonic film withboth mechanicalpropertiesandtunablestructuralcolorwas prepared byincorporating deepeutecticsolvents (DES)intocelulose nanocrystals(CNC)through layeredcasting,and itwas namedCNC/DESphotonicfilm.The results showedthat theamountofDESaddedwasacrucialparameterforregulatingthestructuralcolor,mechanicalproperties,thermalstabilityandesponsiecaracteristicsofphotonicfis.eitroductionofDEectivelyaddressedthedefectofisufet flexibility in photonic films,increasing the elongation at break to (0.74±0.18)% . The film exhibited a wide color gamut (gradually transitioning from blue to orange-red) and enhanced thermal stability. The CNC/DES0.5 photonic film(the addition amount of DES was (20 0.5% )demonstrated excellnt humidity-responsive characteristics,as the realitive humidity increased from 50% to 99 % ,the film changedfromelowgreentod,whilealsoexhibitinggoodreversiblehumidityperformance(over2Ocycles).Aditionaly,efilm displayedsensitiveidentificationoftraceamountsofwaterinethanolwatermixtures,graduallchangingfromredtoyelowgreenas the water content decreased. Leveraging the responsive characteristics of CNC to H2O molecules,photonic filmsexhibited reversible behavior in humidity sensing and moisture detection.
