"Emphasizing Science and Suppressing Liberal Arts": The Policy Orientation and Public-Opinion Interaction of the Nationalist Government' s Higher Education During the Total War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression

Abstract:Aftertheoutbreakof theWarofResistanceagainstJapaneseAggresion,theNationalistGovermmentfacedasevereresourcecrisis,cesitigadusmntsinishigheducatiopoliiesIn1938,CenLfusucedasinsteofEducatioFllowing Chiang Kai-shek'sdirectives,heimplementedamoreagresive“empasizingscienceandsuppessngliberalarts”’policythanuring WangShijie'stenure.Fourmeasueswereadopted:implementingaunifiedcolegeentranceexaminationsystem,establisingmorescience-orientedshools,introducingagovementfunddpolicyfavoringsiencesudents,andreatingtheCentralCommitefoCostuc tion-EducationooperationTisolicwaspropelledbyteoveent’swillandthistiutisofigherducation’sdevelopntal needs.Intellctua’atiudeowadstiscyevodwihirimsancs,angingfroinitialaceseettersiio Theirmaindemandswerebetertreatmenandstatus.However,inthecontextofthewar,thesedemands,complicatedbyotherfactors, were hard to fulfill.
