Noise Control and Optimization of the Intake and Exhaust System for Medium- and Heavy-duty Commercial Vehicles

Abstract:Withincreasinglystringentemissionregulationsandimproved powertrainnoisecontrol,theintakeandexhaustnoise controloftraditionalfuelmedium-andheavy-dutycommercialvehicleshasbecomemorechalenging.Thispaperpresentsfourengineringoptimizations tatsignificantlyreducevehiclenoise:(1)adinganexpansionchambertotheaircompresorintakepipeeliminates the“tooting”sound and reduces 170~300Hz noise at the air intake by 6.1 dB(A).(2)integratinga Helmholtz resonator into the air intake pipe lowers idle noise by 2 dB(A)and reduces noise by 2~3dB(A) on average during gentle acceleration.(3)cutting the swirl vane to retain only one-third of its structure greatly attenuates 200~450Hz low-frequency noise during acceleration/deceleration, improvingsoundquality.(4)wrapping theidentifidwhistlesourcetheexhaustbelows—withsound-insulatingandabsorbingmaterialcompletely eliminates high-frequency airflowwhistle.
