Characterization of the Causesand Pollutantsof a Fog in South CentralHebei,China

Abstract: [Purposes] To analyze the causes and pollutant characteristics of a persistent fog event in the central and southern regions of Hebei Province from October 29 to November 2,2O23,and to explore the interrelationship between fog and polltants in order to enhance the forecasting capabilities for fog and pollution.[Methods] Using conventional observational data,hourly air quality data,and ERA5 reanalysis data,combined with meteorological factors such as circulation background,wind fields,inversion layers, and subsidence movements,the formation and maintenance mechanisms of the heavy fog and the characteristics of pollutants are analyzed.[Findings] During the fog period,zonal circulation was dominant at (20 500hPa , while warm ridges and warm centers were present at 85O hPa. The surface was situated in a pressure-equalizing field on the southeast side of a cold high-pressure system,providing favorable moisture and weak wind conditions.Under large-scale subsidence,low-level wind speeds were small,relative humidity exhibited a "dry upper and moist lower" profile,and the persistent absence of clouds aloft, weak surface winds,and a convergence line contributed to the continuous development of the fog.Nearsurface temperature inversion and subsidence hindered the upward transport of moisture,facilitating moisture accumulation and radiative cooling,leading to the formation of radiation fog.The primary pollutant during the event was PM2⋅5 ,mainly originating from the central and southern parts of Hebei Province. This may be attributed to the wet removal effect of fog on PM2..5 ,resulting in decreased PM2..5 concentrations during the dense fog stage.Conclusions] The fog event was primarily radiation fog,characterized by its long duration, high intensity,and extensive coverage.The main pollutant was PM2.5,predominantly originating from the central and southern regions of Hebei Province.
