Expansion of the Jurisdiction of the Western Regions Protectorate from 36 to 55 Kingdoms during the Western Han Dynasty

—Based on the Han Dynasty Slips from Dunhuang

Abstract：Ancient historicalrecordssuchas theBook ofHanonlycontainvague passages about thechanges ofthe jurisdictionofthe WesternRegions Protectorateduringthe WestemnHandynasty，buttheHandynastyslips fromXuanquanhave been foundtoprovidefirst-hand informationthatperfectlysupplementsourknowledgeregardingthisisue.Researchhasfoundthat theplacename“WesternRegions”became oficialduring thetime when Zheng Jiwasappointed Governoroftheregion.Initially，theprotectorateicluded36ingdomslocatedaroundtheTarimBasin.AftertheHunssubmitedtotheHandastyowe er，its jurisdictionexpandedtoicludeseveraladditionalkingdoms inteeasterTianshanMountains，aswellasothrnearby kingdomssuchasDayuantothewestofthePamirs，andthenumberof theprotectorate'svasalkingdomsincreasedfrom36to 55.Inaddition，theresearchhasalsorevealedthatthe WesterReginProtectoratecame toexertanever-increasinginfluenceon otheregionalkingdomssuchasWusun.Thisindicatesthattheincreaseinvaalkingdomsledtoasignificantincreaseinthe scope of jurisdiction as wellas strengthened governance in the region.
