On the Archaeological Surveying and Mapping of the Dunhuang Caves

Abstract：Basedonthesurveyingandmappingstudiescontainedin Vols.IandIoftheserialarchaeologicalreportentitled CompleteColectionof theDunhuangGrotoes，andbyfollowing theworkflowofconductingarchaeologicalsurveysandthen mapping thecaves，thispapersystematicallydemonstrates thespecificapplicationsandkeytechnicalcharacteristicsof various methods usedtocollctdatainarchaeologicalresearch.Themethodologiesstudied includeGPS，establishingcontrolpoints，mploying3Dlaserscaning，implementingdigitalimagestitching，andapplyingclose-rangephotogrammetry.Second，thestudy takes an in-depth look atthecorerequirements ofarchaeological mapping，suchastheselectionof projection planes and the treatmentofrelationships betweenplansandelevationviews，anddiscusses thecentral technical elements thatensurtheauracyand scientificvalidityofarchaeological drawings.Theconclusion emphasizes thatprecise measurementanddrawing arecomplementary practicesthatareessentialtoarchaeologicalreportingoncavetemples，theresultsofwhichproducevaluablescientific reference material and maps of these important cultural heritage sites.
