The Introduction to the Latter Section of the Mahaparinirvana Sutra and Its Influence on the Nirvana Sutra Ilustrations in the Mogao Caves

Abstract:According to extant compilations of Buddhist scriptures,the Latter Sectionof the Mahaparinirvana Sutra was translatedintheNepalaKingdomduringtheLindeera(664-665CE)oftheTangdynasty,andwaslaterintroducedintotheCentralPlains intheearlyYifengera(76CE).However,anewlydiscoveredDunhuang manuscriptoftheLaterSectionoftheMahaparinirvanaSutrabearsaninscriptionindicatingthatthedateofitstranscriptionactuallypredatesthtimespecifiedinthese compilations byover twodecades.Afteritsintroductioninto theCentral Plains,manyBuddist scholarsofthe Tangand Song dynastiesdoubted whether thetextwas acontinuationofthe MahaparinirvanaSutraornot,although evidence from the manuscriptsand murals ofDunhuang demonstratethat theLater Section manuscript waslater accepted asanauthenticcontinuationofthe sutra in Dunhuang. Researchon the manuscriptsuggests tat Dunuang's monastic monks appended the two volumes ofthe LaterSectiondirectlyontoaforty-volumecopyofthe Nirvana Sutraasits 41stand42ndvolumes,while studyof the muralsofDunhuangshowsthattheintroductionof tetextwassoinfluentialthattheartistsoftheMogaoCaveschangedtheirmastercopiesoftheNirvanasutramurals toreflectanewiconographicplotintheirilustrations.Thesetextualandiconographical changes canbe proven bycomparing the two Nirvana sutraillustrations respectivelydepicted in Mogao caves 332and148.
